BPD Amiga Users' Manual BPD
NAME
BPD -- Install/remove wedge to boot system into PAL mode.
SYNOPSIS
BPD [ '?' | 'REMOVE' | 'NTSC' ]
DESCRIPTION
BPD installs, via resident RomTags, a wedge into the boot sequence
that turns on the PAL bit in ECS Agnus. This operation happens
very early in the boot process, before graphics.library configures,
so the system will come up well and truly in PAL mode, with all the
GfxBase fields set correctly.
BPD uses the same reboot survival technology as RAD:, so if you have
a machine with more than 512K of CHIP RAM, you must use 'SetPatch r'
to get this to work.
BPD must be run from the CLI. The command line options are:
'?':
Prints a usage synopsis.
'REMOVE':
Removes the wedge. (Just 'r' will work here.)
'NTSC':
Installs an NTSC version of the wedge, which is useful if
you're European. (Just 'n' will work here.)
<anything else>:
Installs the PAL wedge. BPD will not permit itself to be
installed twice.
After installing or removing the wedge, reboot the system to make the
change take effect. If you wish to temporarily prevent the system
from coming up in the different mode with BPD installed, hold down
the left mouse button during reboot.
If you don't have an ECS Agnus in your machine, BPD won't let you do
anything.
NOTES
BPD was written as a result of discovering just how hard it was to
get a system to boot up in PAL mode, short of attacking the machine
with a soldering iron. Other programs such as PALBoot don't do the
job because by the time they've run, graphics has already configured
itself for NTSC, so all the GfxBase fields reflect NTSC values.
It was important to me to test software under PAL mode, and I wanted
to do it right, so I wrote this.
BPD is intended for 1.3. 2.0 has built-in the ability to bring up
PAL displays.

BUGS
BPD seems to interact badly with 2090A hard disk controllers. (The
evidence is largely anecdotal at this time; I'm still investigating
this.) If you have a 2090A, BPD may or may not work for you.
If you run 'BPD REMOVE', attempts to reinstall BPD before rebooting
will fail; it thinks it's still installed. Fixing this was rather
more trouble than I was willing to expend.
According to the program 'SI' (part of the Cramden Utilities), after
installing BPD, ExecBase reports the powerline frequency to be 50 Hz.
You may want to watch out for this. (Maybe this is a bug in the OS?)
BPD was not written to consider the WorkBench startup, so I don't
recommend attaching an icon to it.
